PHRASAL VERBS

These are some of the best known phrasal verbs in english, obviously, we cannot focus on all the types of phrasal verbs due to they are a lot.


  • To ask for
1.1 To request.
For ex:  Can I ask you for a favor?
1.2 to seek or provoke something negative
For ex: If you date him, you're asking for trouble. 

  • To break down

1.1 to stop working
For ex: Our car broke down while we were driving to the supermarket.
1.2 to end negotiations unsuccessfully
For ex: After days of negotiations, the talks broke down.
1.3 to remove or dismount
For ex: The firemen had to break down the door to get into the house.
1.4 to start crying
For ex: It was the most stressful week. By Friday I broke down and cried. 

  • To bring up

1.1 to raise a child
For ex: I was brought up by my grandmother.
1.2 to mention
For ex: I hate him. Don't ever bring his name up again! 

  • To come back


1.1 to return
For ex: We are coming back from vacation next week. 

  • To find out


1.1 to discover; to learn
For ex: Did you find out what happened to Joe? 

  • To get in 


1.1 to arrive
For ex: What time did you get in last night?
 1.2 to enter
For ex: Get in the car and I will take you to school. 


  • To get out (of)

1.1 to leave or exit
For ex: It's too smoky, I have to get out of here.
1.2 to leave or exit  
For ex: He got out of the car quickly.
1.3 to avoid doing something
For ex: How can I get out of going to work today?
1.4 to remove

For ex: I tried, but I can't get the stain out of my new dress. 

  • To go back

1.1 to return
For ex: I'm so embarassed. I can never go back to that bar again.  
1.2 to date to an early time, to have a long history
For ex: This story goes back to when I was young.

  • To go out
 1.1 to leave
For ex: Let's go out and play in the snow!
1.2 to be sent
For ex: Has the mail gone out yet?
1.3 to be transmitted
For ex: The news went out last night.
1.4 to be extinguished; to stop working
For ex: The lights went out during the storm.
 1.5 to become unfashionable
For ex: Mini skirts went out of style last year. 


  • To grow up

1.1 to mature, to become an adult

For ex: Alex grew up in France, but now he lives in Italy.

  • To hurry up
 1.1 to rush
For ex: Hurry up or we will be late.

  • To look after
 1.1 to care for; to attend
For ex: My parents are looking after the children while we go to dinner.

  • To look for
 1.1 to try to find, to search
For ex: Paul is looking for the document you requested.

  • To look forward to 

1.1 to wait for or anticipate something pleasant
For ex: We are really looking forward to your visit!
